What to Include in a Brand Identity Brief

Sep 20262 min readBy Vinay Dodla

Give a design team the business context, audience and real applications needed to create an identity you can use consistently.

A useful brand brief explains the business before describing a preferred visual style. Start with what you sell, who chooses it and why they might choose an alternative. Those answers help a designer make decisions that serve your audience rather than simply reflect the references in a mood board.

Describe the buying situation. Explain where customers first encounter you and what they need to trust before enquiring. A company selling a complex service may need to communicate reliability and clarity across proposals, presentations and its website. A consumer product may need its packaging to explain the offer quickly. Include examples of the actual buying journey.

Bring evidence, not just adjectives. Words such as premium, friendly and modern mean different things to different people. Show an existing customer question, a proposal or a competitor example and explain what works or fails. Distinguish facts about the business from ambitions for its future positioning.

List the applications. Identify the materials your team actually produces: social posts, sales decks, invoices, packaging, signage or product screens. Ask for the identity to be demonstrated in those contexts. A mark that works on a presentation slide still needs to be checked at small sizes and in everyday documents.

Agree what the handover contains. Specify file formats, colour values, typography guidance, templates and usage examples. Clarify font and asset licensing responsibilities. Decide who owns the final assets and how staff will access the approved versions instead of recreating them from old files.

Set a decision process. Name the approver, gather feedback in one place and evaluate proposals against the brief. Separate problems that affect understanding from personal taste. After launch, review whether the team can apply the system consistently and which missing templates create unnecessary work.

Our brand identity service can begin with those practical requirements. Tell us what your brand needs to communicate, where it appears today and which materials your team struggles to keep consistent.
